Praise & Worship Team Ministry
Philosophy of Worship
Oh come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms. O come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our maker. For He is our God. And we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand. (Psalm 95:1-2, 6-7)
VISION FOR PRAISE & WORSHIP MINISTRY AT WOODLAND PARK CHRISTIAN CHURCH
Our mission at New Haven Christian Church is to HONOR and lift up Jesus as Lord and Savior, to SPREAD the good news of His love to our community and the world, and SHOW the light of Christ in our lives through worship, service, and fellowship. Our Praise & Worship Ministry encompasses three specific focuses:
To bring worship to God and foster a heart of worship within each other as well as the congregation we serve.
To use music in various settings as an outreach to non-believers as well as hurting believers.
To use music in specific productions that incorporates other performing arts and brings a message of hope and healing.
These three focuses will include worship bands, outreach bands, vocal and instrumental ensembles for use in worship as well as outreach, and musical groups that are assembled for specific events (Christmas, Easter, etc.)
In scripture it tells us that music was born and birthed through an angel (whom God created). His name was Lucifer. Music, in the beginning, was created solely to worship God. When Lucifer began to see himself, "like the Most High" (Isaiah 14:13-14) and conned other angels into worshipping him and not the Heavenly Father, God kicked them all out of heaven (Revelation 12:3, 7-9).
It is so important to remember that, as those who share their talents in front of others, we see to it that God is the one being worshipped. Whether we choose to play music to evangelize or "entertain" or even to heal as David did to King Saul,
(1 Samuel 16:23), we realize that God created music for worship. This does not mean it is evil to use music for other purposes as long as there is a clear understanding as Christians, our most ultimate expression and satisfaction comes from worshipping God and not from others worshipping us, our talents, or our music. We should be more interested in God's stuff than our stuff!
NHCC PRAISE BAND
The goal of the praise band at New Haven Christian Church is a singular goal-to effectively facilitate worship of Jesus Christ, the one True God. We take this ministry very seriously, and for this reason we recommend that only those who feel called to this ministry and time commitment plan to audition. If the Lord has led you to consider auditioning, here are the musical abilities and other requirements that are necessary to proceed:
MUSICAL REQUIREMENTS
All potential team members should:
1) Have at least two years experience on the instrument on which you are auditioning.
2) Have a working knowledge of music.
3) A plus if you are able to read music and be a reasonably strong sight-reader.
4) Guitarists and keyboardists must be able to read and interpret chord symbols this will be a plus.
5) All players must provide their own instruments and all guitarists must have audio pickups installed in their instruments.
6) Understand that potential team members may be accepted after audition, but their entry to the team may be delayed by a lack of an opening or specific band needs.
SPIRITUAL AND TIME REQUIREMENTS
All potential team members should:
1) Be involved in a weekly Bible study sponsored by NHCC. This includes, but is not limited to small groups, Saturday School, or a weekly Bible study meeting.
2) Be able to attend a weekly team rehearsal, usually held on Wednesdays from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m.
3) Be available to play in all services on most Saturdays, with the understanding that the worship pastor will work to meet scheduling for members on occasional absences and needs to miss specific services.
4) Clearly understand that all music must be studied and prepared each week, a task which may cost team members as much as two hours or more outside of the team rehearsal.
5) Understand that membership in the Praise Team is available only to those who also participate in the Celebration Orchestra.
6) Be willing to be accountable to the rest of the team by checking e-mail on a regular basis for updates (or making your OWN arrangements to stay updated if you do not have e-mail access) and by reporting planned absences from rehearsals or services as early as possible to the instrumental team coordinator and/or the worship pastor.
7) Finally, we believe that flexibility and sensitivity to God's leadership are very important in worship. Changes in scheduling and other aspects of the ministry WILL occur regularly and with little or no warning. Potential team members must be comfortable with rapid change and the flexibility of corporate worship in order to have a good experience in this ministry.
For a scriptural reference and basis for these requirements, please read the following scriptures: 1 Samuel 16:23; Psalm 33:1-3; Psalm 98:4-6; 1 Corinthians 14:15; 1 Corinthians 10:31b; James 1:22-25; 1 Tim 3:1-7; Philippians 3:3 &13-14; Romans 12:3; Proverbs 1:7.
In His Grip and Loving It!!!
